So this brief chapter just has one evil thing upon another thing, Kino used to be a kind pearl diver but one thing led to another, he committed a sin, a sin his wife will forever remember. Basically Kino was reduced to desperation, significantly, everything that has been happening to him is ealted to the pearl of the world.
When Kino reached up to his wife, Juana he slapped her, so basically he got corrupted by all the things that has been happening, "his teeth are bared. He hisses at her like a snake." Already, there is a major change occurring within Kino; he is becoming more and more like an animal —even in his treatment of Juana who, because of her upbringing, accepts such treatment. She knows that there is murder in the heart of her husband, and she accepts it without understanding it. In the same way, she knows that she needs a man; she does not know why, but she knows that Kino is a man, and she cannot live without a man.
Juana changed a lot actually, her love for Kino is dying, she has realized that. She helplessly tries to hold on to their relationship.
